ZINC Thermal Diffusion Coating | ATOMIC ALLOYS

The Atomic Alloys Zinc Thermal Diffusion coating system is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective corrosion protection solution for the most challenging applications requiering wear and corrosion protection. 


Our technology focuses more on a thermal diffusion galvanizing process which is more sustainable than hot dip galvanizing, but still offers superior corrosion protection and wear resistance as well as anti-galling properties. Following are some highlights of our technology, which is a modern and greatly improved version of the well-established sherardizing zinc/iron diffusion process: 


By diffusing zinc atoms into steel, our process creates layers of zinc/iron alloy on any steel part, including wrought and/or forged steel, castings, powdered metal (with no impregnation required!), and all grades of stainless steel, to create a surface with the following traits: 



  • Highly resistant to abrasion and corrosion 


  • Has excellent anti-galling (wear and tear that causes metal to adhere to one another) properties—a replacement for cadmium 


  • Controllable and precise and uniform —thicknesses from 0.0007” to 0.0060” (20-300 microns) 


  • Hard, nonmagnetic, weldable, and spark-free 


  • Chip-proof and can withstand crimping and bending 


  • Highly heat resistant to 1,200°F (650°C) continuous service 


  • Offers an excellent base for paint, powder coating, and rubber bonding 


  • Particularly important for powder metal parts, requiring no impregnation and providing not only extremely good corrosion protection, but also improved mechanical properties 


  • Free from hydrogen and molten metal embrittlement, not subject to strain aging (unlike HDG) 


  • High tensile, heat-treated parts can safely be coated and protected 


  • Works extremely well in harsh marine environments 


  • Totally heavy metal–free nontoxic (RoHS and REACH compliant) 




Our proprietary Zinc thermal diffusion coating system is much more than your average sherardizing process. In itself, the process nixes the need for cadmium plating, eliminating human and environmental exposure and production of cadmium and cadmium oxide. With ArmorGalv thermal diffusion coating, the base metal will not corrode, even when the part is exposed to a thousand hours of salt spray. What you'll see instead is either a free-iron or zinc-iron deposit on the surface of the metal, which can be easily washed away. So even as the sacrificial coating begins to wear down, the parts will still maintain their integrity and overall functionality. The metal components won't seize, and you can ensure that the part will continue to work for years to come.
